This 'Black Painting' was painted on the wall of Goya's own dining room!
In Roman myth, the god Saturn (Cronus in Greek myth) was afraid of a prophecy that one of his children would take his throne. So, the story says, he swallowed his children one after another. Goya painted this terrible myth as a wild-eyed giant coming out of the darkness.
In his seventies, Goya lived in a house outside Madrid called the Quinta del Sordo, 'the Deaf Man's Villa'. He painted 14 pictures on its walls, now called the Black Paintings. This was one of six in the dining room. No one ordered them; they were private murals in Goya's own house. Goya did not give them their titles, either.
After about fifty years, the wall paintings began to fall apart. In 1873, Baron Émile d'Erlanger bought the house. From 1874, he had a restorer from the Prado move the paintings from the walls onto canvas. They were shown at the 1878 World's Fair in Paris and then given to the Spanish state. Today they hang together in a room at the Prado.
This picture is very dark. A giant with wild eyes comes out of the black. He is Saturn, a god in an old story. Goya painted this on a wall in his own house. It was in his dining room!
This picture was on the wall of Goya's dining room. Other dark paintings were in the same room. How Goya felt eating his meals here is still a mystery. But we do not know how often Goya actually ate in this room.
Goya became almost completely deaf after an illness around 1792. But the name 'Deaf Man's Villa' came from an earlier owner who was also deaf, not from Goya.
All the titles of the Black Paintings were given by other people after Goya's death. Some scholars even ask whether this figure is really Saturn. Goya himself left no explanation.
The Baroque painter Rubens also painted this myth, and his picture is also in the Prado. Rubens shows a muscular god in violent action, while Goya shows a wild-eyed figure coming out of the darkness. Comparing them shows how different the two artists were.
