Unsold in England, but a gold medal in Paris! An ordinary country scene that became a special painting.
It is a summer noon by the River Stour in Suffolk, eastern England. An empty hay wagon, pulled by horses, is crossing the shallow river. On the left is a small farmhouse. Far away on the right, people are cutting hay in a sunny meadow. This is the countryside Constable had known since he was a child.
Constable made many outdoor sketches of clouds and changing light, then painted the large picture in his studio. The clouds look real because he studied the weather closely. Still, experts say this is not exactly what he saw. He added and moved things to make a better picture.
In 1821, it was shown at the Royal Academy as 'Landscape: Noon', but no one bought it. Then, at the Paris Salon of 1824, Constable won a gold medal from King Charles X, mainly for this painting, and it amazed young French painters. It was given to the National Gallery in 1886. In a 2005 poll, it was voted Britain's second-favourite painting.
It is a sunny summer day. Horses pull a cart through a river. A small house stands on the left, and a dog watches from the bank. No one in England bought the painting at first. But it won a gold medal in Paris!
At the 1824 Paris Salon, Constable won a gold medal from King Charles X, mainly for this painting. A cast of that medal is set into the frame today. French painters like Delacroix were greatly inspired.
The house on the left belonged to a farmer named Willy Lott. He was said to have been born there and to have left it for no more than four days in his whole life. The house still stands almost unchanged. But none of the trees in the painting still exist.
The wagon is not resting. It is crossing the water toward the ford, and its front wheel is already turning to the right. One idea says the water also made the wooden wheels swell and kept the iron tyres tight, but no one knows for sure.
In 2013, a protester glued a photo onto the painting. In 2022, climate activists covered it with their own 'apocalyptic' version and glued their hands to the frame. Neither protest caused serious damage.
