迷路注文主が「もっと穏やかな空に」と注文！イギリス一高い尖塔の絵。The client wanted a more serene sky! A painting of Britain's tallest spire.
この作品のお話
Story木々のアーチの向こうに、白くかがやく大聖堂がそびえています。イングランド南部のソールズベリー大聖堂を、主教（教会のえらい人）の家の庭から描いた絵です。描いたのはイギリスの風景画家ジョン・コンスタブル。1823年の作品で、今はロンドンのヴィクトリア＆アルバート博物館にあります。
Beyond an arch of trees, a white cathedral rises into the sky. This is Salisbury Cathedral in the south of England, seen from the garden of the bishop's house. The English landscape painter John Constable made it in 1823. Today it is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
この絵を注文したのは、コンスタブルと親しかったジョン・フィッシャー主教です。コンスタブルは1811年からこの大聖堂を何度もスケッチし、1820年には屋外で油絵の下絵も描きました。1823年にロイヤル・アカデミーの展覧会に出したとき、「今までイーゼルに置いた中で、いちばん難しい風景だった」と書いています。
Bishop John Fisher, a close friend of Constable, ordered this painting. Constable had sketched the cathedral many times since 1811, and in 1820 he made an oil sketch outdoors. When he showed the finished work at the Royal Academy in 1823, he wrote that it was the most difficult landscape he had ever had on his easel.
ところが主教は、大聖堂の上にかかる黒っぽい雲が気に入らず、「もっと穏やかな空に」と望みました。コンスタブルは空のより穏やかな別の版を描きましたが、主教はその完成を見ずに亡くなります。この最初の版は1857年に博物館へ寄贈され、イギリスの空と田園を愛した画家の代表作として親しまれています。
But the bishop did not like the dark cloud over the cathedral. He asked for 'a more serene sky.' Constable painted another version with a calmer sky, but the bishop died before it was finished. This first version was given to the museum in 1857. It is loved as a masterpiece by a painter who adored English skies and countryside.

Secrets主教フィッシャーは、大聖堂の尖塔のまわりにかかる黒い雲を気にして、コンスタブルに変更をたのみました。そこでコンスタブルは、空をより穏やかにした別の版を描きます。その版は今、ニューヨークのフリック・コレクションにあります。
Bishop Fisher was troubled by the dark cloud around the cathedral's spire, and he asked Constable to change it. So Constable painted another version with a calmer sky. That version is now in the Frick Collection in New York.
左下の小道で、杖で大聖堂を指しているのがフィッシャー主教、となりにいるのがその奥さんです。注文主を絵の中にさりげなく入れ、「ここから見た景色ですよ」と案内させているのです。
On the path at the lower left, Bishop Fisher points his stick at the cathedral, and his wife stands next to him. Constable quietly put his client into the picture, as if the bishop is showing us the view.
ソールズベリー大聖堂の尖塔は高さ約123メートル。イギリスで最も高い教会の尖塔です。大聖堂には、1215年につくられた「マグナ・カルタ（大憲章）」の原本の一つも保管されています。
The spire of Salisbury Cathedral is about 123 meters tall. It is the tallest church spire in Britain. The cathedral also keeps one of the original copies of Magna Carta from 1215.
主教は、娘エリザベスの結婚祝いとして、小さくて晴れやかな版もコンスタブルにたのみました。その版はアメリカ・カリフォルニアのハンティントン・ライブラリーにあります。同じ景色を描いたいくつもの版が、大西洋の両側に散らばっているのです。
The bishop also asked Constable for a smaller, sunnier version as a wedding present for his daughter, Elizabeth. That version is now in the Huntington Library in California. Different versions of the same view are now found on both sides of the Atlantic.
