On the seashore at dusk, two women and a man sit side by side on a big rock. They watch the moon rise over the horizon. The sky turns purple and gold, and two sailing ships slowly come in from the sea. The German painter Friedrich painted this in 1822. It is in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
Friedrich was born in Greifswald, a town in northern Germany on the Baltic Sea. He painted the seashore of his homeland many times. Wagener, a banker and consul in Berlin, ordered this painting as a pair with a morning landscape, 'The Lonely Tree'. This one shows the evening. The soft light conveys the calm at the end of the day.
In 1861, the painting became the nation's property with the rest of Wagener's collection. After Friedrich's death, his work was forgotten for a while, but it was rediscovered in the 20th century. In 2024, the 250th anniversary of his birth, big exhibitions were held across Germany, and many people admired this quiet seaside scene.

Some experts think the ships coming home stand for souls returning to a peaceful place at the end of life's journey. The three people on the rock may be waiting for those ships, or for someone they love.
Friedrich often painted people with their backs to us, looking at the view. In German, such a figure is called a 'Rückenfigur', a figure seen from behind. It lets us see the view from the figure's point of view.
