Storyドイツ北部のバルト海にうかぶリューゲン島。真っ白なチョークの崖のあいだから、青い海が見わたせます。木々の枝がアーチのように景色をふちどり、手前には3人の人物。赤いドレスの女性、地面にはいつくばる男性、木にもたれて海を見る男性です。1818年ごろに描かれました。
Rügen is an island in the Baltic Sea in northern Germany. Between bright white chalk cliffs, you can see the blue sea. Tree branches frame the view like an arch. In front are three people: a woman in a red dress, a man crawling on the ground, and a man leaning on a tree as he looks out to sea. It was painted around 1818.
1818年1月、フリードリヒは約20歳年下のカロリーネと結婚し、その夏、弟とともにリューゲン島をおとずれました。この絵はその旅の思い出から生まれ、二人の結婚を祝う作品と考えられています。左の赤いドレスの女性が妻カロリーネ、中央で帽子をぬいで地面をのぞく男が画家本人だというのが、よく知られた見方です。
In January 1818, Friedrich married Caroline, who was about 20 years younger. That summer, they visited Rügen with his brother. The painting comes from that trip and is seen as a celebration of their marriage. The usual view is that the woman in red on the left is Caroline, and the man in the middle, with his hat off, is Friedrich himself.
崖の形はひとつの場所そのままではなく、いくつものスケッチを組み合わせたものです。いつも人を寄せつけない広い自然を描いたフリードリヒにしては、明るく、やわらかな雰囲気の珍しい作品です。今はスイスのヴィンタートゥールにある美術館が所蔵しています。
The shapes of the cliffs do not show one exact place. Friedrich combined several sketches. Most of his landscapes feel huge and lonely, but this one is unusually bright and gentle. Today it belongs to a museum in Winterthur, Switzerland.
白い崖のあいだに青い海が見えます。丘の上に3人の人がいます。赤い服の女性は画家の妻かもしれません。草の上の男の人は画家本人だと考えられています。フリードリヒは結婚したあと、この島をおとずれました。
We see the blue sea between white cliffs. Three people are on the hill. The woman in red may be the painter's wife. The man on the grass is thought to be the painter. Friedrich visited this island after his wedding.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets服の色は、キリスト教の3つの徳を表すという解釈があります。中央の男の青は「信仰」、左の女性の赤は「愛」、右の男の緑は「希望」。色に意味をこめるのはフリードリヒらしい工夫です。
One reading says the clothes show the three Christian virtues: blue for faith on the middle man, red for love on the woman, and green for hope on the man at the right. Friedrich liked to give colours meaning.
中央の男は帽子をぬいで地面に置き、草につかまりながら崖の下をのぞいています。この帽子は、大きな自然の前でのけんそんな気持ちを表すと考えられています。右の男が遠い海をながめているのに対し、彼は崖の下の深い谷間を見つめています。
The man in the middle has taken off his hat and put it on the ground. He holds the grass and looks down the cliff. The hat is seen as a sign of humility before nature. While the man on the right looks out to sea, this man looks down into the deep gap.
この絵のモデルは「ヴィッサウアー・クリンケン」という岩だとよく言われますが、まちがいです。その岩は絵が描かれたあとに、浸食でできたものでした。そして2005年には大きくくずれ落ちています。
Many people believe the cliffs are the Wissower Klinken rocks, but that is wrong. Those rocks formed later through erosion, after the painting was made. And in 2005, they largely collapsed.
海にはとても小さな帆船が2そう浮かんでいます。この2そうは、魂が永遠の命へ旅立つことを表し、手前の2人の男に対応しているという解釈もあります。とても小さいので、目をこらして探してみてください。
Two tiny sailing boats float on the sea. One interpretation says they stand for the soul setting off to eternal life, and that they match the two men in front. They are tiny, so look carefully.
