Leafless oaks and a ruined church. A quiet procession moves through the snowy dusk.
In a snowy graveyard, old oak trees without leaves stand in rows. In the middle rises the wall of a ruined church. Below it, a small procession of monks moves toward the gate. The sky is faintly bright with the evening light, and a thin crescent moon floats in it. The German Romantic painter Friedrich painted this in 1809 and 1810.
The ruined church is based on Eldena Abbey, near Friedrich's hometown of Greifswald. The abbey fell into ruin around the time of the Thirty Years' War, and its bricks were reportedly taken to build fortifications. Friedrich made sketches outdoors and then put the scene together in his studio. The lower third of the picture sinks into darkness. Only the top of the ruin and the tips of the branches catch the light.
In 1810, it was shown with "The Monk by the Sea" at the Academy exhibition in Berlin. King Frederick William III of Prussia bought both paintings. They are still together in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Friedrich was forgotten for a long time after his death, but he was rediscovered in the 20th century. In 2024, his 250th birthday year, big exhibitions were held across Germany.
It is a cold winter evening. Old trees have no leaves. A broken church stands in the middle. Small people walk in the snow. Can you find the thin moon?

At the 1810 exhibition, Friedrich asked for this painting to hang below "The Monk by the Sea". One shows a monk alone on a wide shore, the other a procession of monks in a graveyard at dusk. Some scholars think the pair together speaks about human life and death.
The king probably bought the two paintings because the crown prince, then about 15 and later King Frederick William IV, wanted them. The young prince may have been charmed by this new kind of landscape painting.
Look closely at the snow in front. Tilted crosses and gravestones stand half buried. In front of the procession, there is a newly dug grave. The monks may be saying goodbye to one of their brothers. Pieces of a story are hidden all over this dark picture.
When this picture was painted, much of Germany was under the control of Napoleon's French army. Churches in Greifswald were reportedly used as housing for French soldiers. So some scholars read this funeral as "the burial of Germany's hopes".
