Story山の向こう、雲の中に、背中を向けた巨人がそびえ、こぶしをかまえています。足もとの谷では、人々や馬車、牛の群れが四方八方へにげまどっています。『巨人』と呼ばれるこの絵は、マドリードのプラド美術館にあり、長くゴヤの代表作のひとつとされてきました。
Beyond the mountains, a giant rises into the clouds with his back to us. His fists are raised. In the valley below, people, carts and herds of cattle run away in every direction. This painting, called 'The Colossus', is in the Prado Museum in Madrid. For a long time, it was seen as one of Goya's great works.
描かれたのは1808年以降と考えられています。この年、ナポレオンの軍がスペインに攻めこみ、長い戦争が始まりました。巨人は戦争そのもの、またはスペインを守る力を表すなど、さまざまな解釈があります。ゴヤの妻が亡くなった1812年の財産目録にある「巨人」の絵が、この作品だと考えられてきました。
It is thought to have been painted after 1808. In that year, Napoleon's army invaded Spain, and a long war began. Some say the giant stands for war itself, and others say it is a power protecting Spain. A list of Goya's family property from 1812, made when his wife died, includes a picture of 'a giant'. It has long been linked to this painting.
2008年、プラド美術館の専門家が、これはゴヤではなく、ゴヤの協力者アセンシオ・フリアの作ではないかと発表し、大論争になりました。翌年、美術館は「ゴヤの弟子の作」と結論づけましたが、反対する研究者も多く、2021年には表示が「ゴヤに帰属（ゴヤの作とされる）」に変わりました。作者の問題は、今も完全には決着していません。
In 2008, an expert at the Prado said it might be by Asensio Juliá, an assistant of Goya, and not by Goya himself. This started a big debate. The next year, the museum decided it was by a follower of Goya. But many scholars disagreed, and in 2021 the label was changed to 'Attributed to Goya'. The question is still not fully settled.

Secrets2008年、左下の筆あとが「A・J」という頭文字に見えるとして、アセンシオ・フリアの作である証拠ではと話題になりました。しかし古い目録番号の数字だという反論もあり、決め手にはなりませんでした。
In 2008, some brushstrokes at the lower left were read as the letters 'AJ'. People wondered if they were Asensio Juliá's initials. Others said they were numbers from an old inventory, so they did not prove anything.
人も牛も馬もにげまどう中、谷のまん中で一頭のロバだけがじっと立ち止まっています。騒ぎに気づかないのか、何かのたとえなのか。見る人の想像をかきたてる小さな見どころです。
While people, cows and horses all run away, one donkey stands still in the middle of the valley. Does it not notice the panic, or does it mean something? It is a small detail that makes viewers wonder.
スペインの詩人アリアーサの愛国詩には、ピレネー山脈からあらわれてスペインを守る巨人が登場します。雲の上にそびえる姿がよく似ていることから、この絵はその詩から生まれたのでは、という説もあります。
A patriotic poem by the Spanish poet Arriaza describes a giant who rises from the Pyrenees mountains to protect Spain. Because the images are so alike, some think the painting was inspired by this poem.
ゴヤには『巨人』という版画もあります。月の下、地平線にこしかけた大きな巨人が、ふり返るように見ている不思議な作品です。ひとりぼっちの巨人という点で絵とよく似ていて、関係を指摘する研究者もいます。
Goya also made a print called 'The Giant'. Under the moon, a huge giant sits on the horizon and looks back over his shoulder. Like the painting, it shows a lonely giant, and some experts point out a link between them.
