この作品のお話
Story緑のソファの上で、白い服の女性が両手を頭のうしろに組んで横になり、まっすぐこちらを見ています。黄色い上着にピンクの帯、金色の小さな靴。描いたのはスペインの宮廷画家ゴヤです。1800年から1807年ごろの作品で、今はマドリードのプラド美術館にあります。
On a green sofa, a woman in a white dress lies with her hands behind her head and looks straight at us. She wears a yellow jacket, a pink sash and small gold shoes. The painter was Goya, an artist at the Spanish royal court. It was painted around 1800 to 1807 and is now in the Prado Museum in Madrid.
「マハ」とは、18世紀の終わりごろ、マドリードの下町で、はでな服装と気の強さで人気だった若い女性たちのことです。ゴヤはこの絵とほぼ同じポーズ・同じ大きさで、古代の女神のような姿の『裸のマハ』も描いています。2枚は当時の権力者、宰相マヌエル・ゴドイが持っていたことが、1808年の財産目録からわかっています。モデルがだれなのかは、今もわかっていません。
A "maja" was a young woman from the working-class streets of Madrid in the late 1700s, famous for her showy clothes and bold attitude. Goya also painted "The Naked Maja" in almost the same pose and size, in the style of an ancient goddess. A list of property from 1808 shows that both paintings belonged to Manuel Godoy, the powerful chief minister. Nobody knows for sure who the model was.
2枚がどうして描かれたのか、ならべて見せるためだったのかは、はっきりしていません。ゴヤが生きているあいだ、2枚が展覧会で公開されることはありませんでした。王立サン・フェルナンド美術アカデミーなどをへて、2枚は1901年にプラド美術館へ入り、今はならんで展示されています。スペイン絵画を代表する「対の名画」です。
We do not know exactly why the two paintings were made, or whether they were meant to be shown together. They were never shown in an exhibition during Goya's lifetime. After a time at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and other places, both entered the Prado in 1901. Today they hang side by side as a famous pair of Spanish paintings.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets1808年、ゴドイの財産が差し押さえられたときの目録では、2枚は「マハ」ではなく「ヒターナ」と記録されていました。ヒターナは、ロマの人々の女性を指す昔のスペイン語です。「マハ」の名で呼ばれるようになったのは、もっとあとのことです。名前ひとつにも長い歴史があるのです。
In the 1808 list made when Godoy's property was seized, the two paintings were not called "majas". They were recorded as "gitanas", an old Spanish word for Roma women. The name "maja" came later. Even a title can have a long history.
1810年代、2枚の絵はスペインの宗教裁判所（教会の取りしまり機関）に差し押さえられ、1815年にはゴヤも説明のために呼び出しを受けたと伝えられています。問題にされたのは主に『裸のマハ』でしたが、対になるこの絵も一緒に表から姿を消すことになりました。
In the 1810s, the two paintings were seized by the Spanish Inquisition, a church court, and in 1815 Goya was reportedly called to explain them. The main problem was "The Naked Maja", but this partner painting also disappeared from view with it.
ゴドイは『着衣のマハ』で『裸のマハ』をおおい、しかけで入れかえて客に見せていた、という言い伝えがあります。おもしろい話ですが、それを示す確かな記録は見つかっていません。あくまで「そんな話が伝わっている」という伝説です。
There is a story that Godoy hung "The Clothed Maja" over "The Naked Maja" and used a device to switch them for his guests. It is a fun tale, but no solid record proves it. It is only a legend that has been passed down.
スペイン語の「マハ（maja）」「マホ（majo）」は、今の会話では「感じがいい」「すてき」という意味でもよく使われます。「ケ・マハ！（なんてすてきな人！）」とほめることも。200年以上前の下町のおしゃれ娘の呼び名が、今もほめ言葉として生きているのです。
In Spanish today, "maja" and "majo" are often used to mean "nice" or "lovely". People say "¡Qué maja!" to mean "What a lovely person!" A name for stylish city girls from over 200 years ago is still alive as a compliment.
