迷路王家が勢ぞろい！…でも左奥に画家がこっそり。The whole royal family! And the painter is hiding on the left.
この作品のお話
Storyスペイン国王カルロス4世とその一家、あわせて13人が横に並んだ、縦2.8メートル、横3.4メートル近い巨大な集団肖像画です。まん中に王妃マリア・ルイサ、右に王が立ち、宝石や勲章がきらきら光ります。ゴヤが1800年に描いた作品で、今はマドリードのプラド美術館にあります。
This huge group portrait shows King Charles IV of Spain and his family, thirteen people in a row. It is 2.8 meters high and almost 3.4 meters wide. Queen María Luisa stands in the center, and the king stands to the right. Their jewels and medals sparkle. Goya painted it in 1800, and it is now in the Prado Museum in Madrid.
1799年、ゴヤは王の第一宮廷画家になりました。1800年、王家の離宮があるアランフエスで、王家の人々を実際に見ながら10枚の油絵の習作を描き、それをもとにこの大作を仕上げました。左奥のうす暗いところには、大きなカンヴァスに向かうゴヤ自身の姿があります。ベラスケスの『ラス・メニーナス』にならった仕かけだといわれます。
In 1799, Goya became the king's First Court Painter. In 1800, at the royal palace in Aranjuez, he painted ten oil studies of members of the family from life. He used them to finish this large painting. In the shadows on the left, you can see Goya himself at a big canvas. This idea is said to come from Velázquez's 'Las Meninas'.
豪華な衣装なのに、王家の人々はどこか平凡に見えます。19世紀のフランスの作家ゴーティエは「宝くじに当たった町の食料品屋の一家のようだ」と言ったと伝えられます。ゴヤが王家を皮肉ったのか、ありのままを描いただけなのか、今も意見が分かれます。1808年、宮廷の反乱とナポレオンの介入によって、王は位を失います。
Even in their fine clothes, the royal family look quite ordinary. The 19th-century French writer Gautier is said to have joked that they looked like a grocer's family who had just won the lottery. Did Goya make fun of the royals, or did he simply paint them as they were? People still disagree. In 1808, a revolt at court and Napoleon's interference cost the king his throne.

Secrets青い服の王子フェルナンド（のちの国王フェルナンド7世）のとなりで、顔をそむけている女性がいます。王子の花嫁がまだ決まっていなかったので、顔を描けなかったのだと考えられています。
Next to Prince Ferdinand in blue, the future King Ferdinand VII, a woman turns her face away. His bride had not been chosen yet, so Goya could not paint her face. That is the most common explanation.
左の年配の女性は、王の姉マリア・ホセファ。こめかみに小さな黒いものがついています。これは「つけぼくろ」で、当時すでに流行おくれになっていたおしゃれでした。ゴヤはそれもそのまま描いています。彼女は絵の完成後まもない1801年に亡くなりました。
The older woman on the left is María Josefa, the king's sister. There is a small black mark on her temple. It is a fake beauty spot, a fashion that was already out of date. Goya painted it just as it was. She died in 1801, soon after the painting was finished.
右奥で横顔だけをのぞかせている女性は、ポルトガル王家に嫁いでその場にいなかった長女カルロタ・ホアキナだとされてきました。一方で、1798年に亡くなった王女マリア・アマリア（王の弟アントニオ・パスクアルの妻）だとする見方もあり、意見が分かれています。
At the back right, a woman shows only her profile. She has long been identified as the eldest daughter, Carlota Joaquina, who had married into the Portuguese royal family and was not there. Others think she is Princess María Amalia, the wife of the king's brother Antonio Pascual, who had died in 1798. Experts do not agree.
ゴヤは大作にとりかかる前に、王家の人々を実際に見ながら、10枚の油絵の習作（練習の絵）を描きました。そのうち5枚が今もプラド美術館に残っていて、本番の絵とくらべることができます。
Before starting the big painting, Goya made ten oil studies of members of the royal family from life. Five of them are still in the Prado Museum, so you can compare them with the final picture.
