Goya was born in Fuendetodos, a small village in northeastern Spain. His cheerful designs for tapestries made him known, and he finally became First Court Painter to the King. But in his forties, a serious illness left him deaf. After that, he made many paintings and prints about the horrors of war and the dark side of the human mind. In his last years, he moved to Bordeaux in France, where he died.

“The sleep of reason produces monsters.”

— Francisco de Goya, Title written on plate 43 of his print series Los Caprichos (1799)(版画集『ロス・カプリーチョス』第43番に本人が記した題(1799年))
