Friedrich was born in Greifswald, on the Baltic Sea, which was then ruled by Sweden. He worked mainly in Dresden. He painted quiet, mysterious landscapes: seas of fog, moonlit shores and snowy forests. He often added small figures with their backs to us, so we feel we are looking at the view with them. He was forgotten after his death, but was rediscovered in the 20th century.

“The painter should paint not only what he sees in front of him, but also what he sees inside himself.”

— Caspar David Friedrich, From his notes on paintings by his contemporaries (c. 1830)(同時代の画家たちの絵についての覚え書き(1830年ごろ)より)
