Two men watch the moon, faces hidden. Did it inspire a famous play?
On a rocky path at dusk, two men stand close together and look at a thin crescent moon. An oak tree with bare roots frames the moon like a window. The German Romantic painter Friedrich painted this small picture in 1819–1820. It is in the Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden.
We see only their backs, not their faces. Some say the older man on the right is Friedrich himself, and the man on the left is his student. Their clothes are in the 'old German' style, loved by young people who wanted a united and free Germany. From 1819, this style was officially restricted. The quiet moon scene hides the mood of its time.
Friedrich liked this idea and later painted a version with a man and a woman (in Berlin) and another with two men (in the Metropolitan Museum in New York). In his pictures, we look at nature through figures seen from behind. This can make us feel as if we are standing in the landscape with them.
Two men stand on a rocky path. We see only their backs. They look at a thin moon. A big old tree is next to them. It is very quiet.

Samuel Beckett saw this painting in Dresden in 1937. Later in Berlin, standing before the similar 'Man and Woman Contemplating the Moon', he is said to have called it the source of 'Waiting for Godot'. Which painting he meant is still debated.
When someone asked what the two men were doing, Friedrich is said to have joked, 'They are plotting against the government.' It was an ironic joke from a time when old German clothes were restricted.
The dark part of the crescent moon is painted as a faint circle. This is called earthshine: sunlight bounces off the Earth and lights the dark side of the moon. Friedrich watched the sky very carefully.
On the right, an oak with bare roots is half dead. At the upper left, above the two men, an evergreen spruce stays green. Some experts read the dying tree as death and the evergreen as hope for eternal life. Death and hope share one picture.
