The painter of skies who loved his home

Constable was born in East Bergholt, Suffolk, in eastern England. His father owned mills. He never left Britain. Again and again, he sketched outdoors: the River Stour, the fields of his home and the changing clouds. His masterpiece, The Hay Wain, was not praised much in Britain at first, but it won a gold medal in France and inspired French painters.

“Painting is but another word for feeling.”

— John Constable, Letter to his friend John Fisher (1821)(友人ジョン・フィッシャーへの手紙(1821年))
