スイスのチューリヒに生まれ、本名はヨハン・ハインリヒ・フュースリといいます。はじめは牧師になりましたが、町の役人の不正を告発したことでスイスを離れ、ロンドンで画家になりました。シェイクスピアやミルトンの物語、夢や幻を、ドラマチックで少しこわい絵にしました。1782年に発表した『夢魔』は大評判になりました。
Fuseli was born in Zürich, Switzerland. His real name was Johann Heinrich Füssli. He first became a minister, but had to leave Switzerland after he exposed a dishonest official. In London, he became a painter. He turned stories by Shakespeare and Milton, and dreams and visions, into dramatic, slightly scary pictures. The Nightmare, shown in 1782, was a huge hit.
