This is a very big painting. It is about 10 meters wide! Napoleon becomes the emperor. He gives a crown to his wife. His mother is in the picture, but she was not really there!

On 2 December 1804, Napoleon was crowned emperor in Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. David painted the moment when Napoleon, already wearing his crown, places a crown on his kneeling wife, Josephine. Behind him sits Pope Pius VII.

🦉 Fun Fact! Napoleon's mother, Letizia, sits in the center of the box. In fact, she did not attend. She was reportedly upset about quarrels among her sons. Still, David painted her in a place of honour.

【本文の訳】1804年12月2日、パリのノートルダム大聖堂で、ナポレオンの皇帝即位の式がおこなわれました。ダヴィッドが描いたのは、自分で冠をかぶったナポレオンが、ひざまずく妻ジョゼフィーヌに皇后の冠をさずける場面です。うしろにはローマ教皇ピウス7世が座っています。
