Unfinished, but a masterpiece. Her name became the name of a sofa!
A barefoot woman in a white dress lies on an ancient-style sofa. She turns to look at us over her shoulder. This is Juliette Récamier, a star of Paris society, painted by David in 1800. She was 23 years old at the time. The portrait is now in the Louvre in Paris.
At that time in France, Neoclassicism was in fashion. People admired ancient Greece and Rome. The simple white dress, the short curly hair, and the ancient-style sofa and lamp were all the latest style. The empty wall and floor create a cool, clear mood and make her stand out.
But this painting is unfinished. Work went slowly, and Madame Récamier also asked David's student Gérard to paint her. David is said to have been upset, so he stopped painting. The picture stayed with David, and after his death it came to the Louvre in 1826. Today, its quiet, unfinished look is highly praised.
A woman lies on a long sofa. She wears a white dress. She has no shoes. This painting is not finished. Today, this kind of sofa has her name: a 'récamier'!
A long sofa with curled ends like this one is still called a 'récamier' in French and English. This painting became so famous that her name became the name of the furniture.
There is a story that the tall, thin ancient-style lamp on the left was painted by young Ingres, who was David's student then. Ingres later became as great as his teacher. But there is no firm proof. He may only have helped with some of the furniture.
David is said to have told her, 'Ladies have their whims, and so do artists,' and never finished it. It may have been a little revenge because she asked another painter to paint her too.
In 1951, the Belgian painter Magritte made a version where Madame Récamier is replaced by a wooden coffin sitting on the sofa. It is a famous, funny parody that turns a great painting upside down.
