A finished face, an unfinished body: the source of the face on the dollar bill!
The face is carefully finished, but the collar and shoulders are only partly painted, and much of the lower canvas is bare. This is an unfinished portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States, painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1796. It is called the 'Athenaeum Portrait' because the Boston Athenaeum, a library in Boston, later bought it.
Martha Washington ordered this as one of a pair of portraits of her and her husband. But Stuart never finished it and kept it for himself. He used this face as a model to paint copies whenever people ordered them. He made dozens of copies, and because each one sold for 100 dollars, he is said to have jokingly called them his '100-dollar bills'.
After Stuart died in 1828, the Boston Athenaeum bought this painting together with Martha's portrait. Since 1980, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston have owned it together and take turns showing it. And this face became the model for the portrait on the American one-dollar bill.

The Washington on today's one-dollar bill comes from an engraving based on this painting, but it is flipped left to right. If you have a dollar bill, compare it with this picture. You will see that he faces the other way.
If he finished it, he would have to hand it over. So Stuart is said to have kept it unfinished. Martha Washington, who ordered it, never received the painting.
Washington had lost almost all his teeth and wore false teeth. That is said to be why his mouth looks so tightly closed. By the way, the story that his false teeth were wooden is a myth. They were made of ivory, human and animal teeth, and metal.
Stuart painted not only Washington but also Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and John Quincy Adams. He painted all of the first six American presidents. He was the leading portrait painter of America's early years.
