The first President gives a speech!? Find the tiny rainbow.
George Washington stands proudly in a black velvet suit, with one arm stretched out. Gilbert Stuart painted this life-size portrait of the first President of the United States in 1796. It was a gift for the Marquess of Lansdowne in Britain, so it is called the 'Lansdowne Portrait'. It is now in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
Senator William Bingham of Philadelphia and his wife ordered the painting. Lord Lansdowne had helped make peace to end the American War of Independence when he was Prime Minister of Britain. Look at the quill pen on the table, the books such as the Constitution under it, and the stars and stripes on the chair. His civilian suit, not a uniform, also shows he is the president of a new nation.
The painting stayed in Britain for a long time. From 1968, it was lent to the National Portrait Gallery. In 2001, a foundation's gift allowed the museum to buy it, and it officially became American. Several other versions of this picture were made, and one of them hangs in the White House.

Look closely at the sky in the top right corner. There is a small rainbow. It is thought to mean that the storm, the War of Independence, is over and peace has come. It is an easy-to-miss sign of hope.
The pose, with one arm stretched out, is said to come from a print of Rigaud's portrait of Bishop Bossuet of France. An old European portrait style was used for an American hero.
In 1814, during the War of 1812, British troops set fire to the White House. First Lady Dolley Madison famously had a full-length Washington portrait of this type saved from the wall. That painting still hangs in the White House.
In 2000, the British noble owner announced plans to sell the painting. The museum feared it might be lost, but a foundation gave 20 million dollars. In 2001, the painting officially became America's.
