Stuart was born in Rhode Island when it was still a British colony. In 1775 he sailed to London and studied for about six years with Benjamin West, an American-born painter. After working in Ireland too, he returned to America in 1793. His portraits of George Washington, the first president, made him famous. He painted straight onto the canvas without sketches, and he is said to have painted about 1,000 people.
