オランダのライデンで、粉ひき職人の家に生まれました。アムステルダムに出て肖像画家として大成功し、集団肖像画「夜警」（1642年）を描きます。暗い背景から人物が光の中に浮かび上がるような描き方で知られます。しかしぜいたくな暮らしや収集のため、1656年に破産してしまいました。晩年は家族を次々に失いながらも、心の奥まで見つめるような絵を描き続けました。
Rembrandt was born in Leiden, the Netherlands, the son of a miller. He moved to Amsterdam and became a very successful portrait painter. In 1642 he painted The Night Watch, a large group portrait. His figures seem to glow out of dark backgrounds. But because of his expensive lifestyle and collecting, he went bankrupt in 1656. In his last years he lost many family members, yet he kept painting deeply human pictures.
