A science class from 400 years ago! The surgeons paid to be in it.
The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp is a group portrait painted in 1632 by Rembrandt, who was then 25. The Amsterdam Surgeons' Guild ordered it. Dr. Tulp, the city's anatomy teacher, is explaining to the surgeons how the muscles of the arm work. Some of the men lean in closely, while others look out at us. Each face is different.
In Amsterdam at that time, there was only one public anatomy lesson a year. It took place in a room like a theater, and people paid to watch. It was a big event in the city. The surgeons also paid to be in the painting, and those in the best places probably paid more. Rembrandt didn't just line them up. He showed a moment when they are caught up in the lesson.
This was Rembrandt's first big job after he moved to Amsterdam, and it quickly made him a popular painter. In 1828, the owners planned to sell it. But King William I stopped the sale, and the Dutch state bought it for 32,000 guilders. Today it hangs in the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
This is a science class from long ago. The teacher is Dr. Tulp. He wears a big black hat. He shows the men how our arm moves. The men paid money to be in this painting!

On the wall at the top left, it says 'Rembrant. f 1632'. There is no 'd'! He spelled his name this way when he was young. It may also be the first painting he signed with his first name, instead of the letters 'RHL'.
'Tulp' is Dutch for 'tulip'. It is said that he took this name because of the tulip on the sign of his house. He later became mayor of Amsterdam.
The man at the back holds a sheet of paper. Rembrandt painted a drawing of an arm on it. In the early 18th century, the numbers and names of the sitters were painted over it. A recent restoration removed these additions from the sheet, so we can see the arm drawing again.
The man at the very top and the man on the far left are thought to have been added later. Maybe more people paid to join! The French painter Manet also made a small copy of this painting around 1856.

A big book lies open in the lower right. It may be Vesalius's famous 16th-century anatomy book.
