Did someone just come in?" Six men look up at you at once!
This is a group portrait of five officials from the cloth makers' guild in Amsterdam. Their job was to check the quality of cloth. A servant without a hat stands behind them. They are in the middle of a meeting, with a book open on the table. They all seem to look up at us, as if we have just walked into the room. What has happened?
The officials served for one year without pay. They met about three times a week and compared dyed cloth with sample pieces. Their Dutch name, "staalmeesters," means "masters of samples." In commissioned group portraits of that time, it was important for every sitter to be clearly visible and easy to recognize. Rembrandt met this demand, but he also added the drama of a frozen moment.
Painted in 1662, it is thought to be Rembrandt's last group portrait. Later, figures from this painting appeared on boxes of Dutch Masters cigars in the United States. So many people know these faces without ever visiting a museum. Today it is one of the most popular works at the Rijksmuseum, along with "The Night Watch." It shows a living moment while still meeting the clients' demands.
Six men are in a meeting. Five of them check the quality of cloth. Suddenly, they all look up at you! Did you just come into their room? This picture was on cigar boxes in America.
For a long time, people thought the man on the far right was holding a bag of seals. But after cleaning in 1991, it turned out to be a pair of gloves. Restoration often brings small surprises like this.
The American cigar brand Dutch Masters used figures from this painting on its boxes. Because of that, many people around the world know these faces as "the men on the cigar box," even if they don't know the title.
The officials attached small lead seals to the cloth. One side showed the city's mark, and the other showed the guild's. Four seals meant the best quality, and one meant the lowest. It was like a star rating today.
The second man from the left is half standing. Is he getting up or sitting down? We cannot tell. This in-between movement makes the moment feel frozen in time.

Red table rug

A rich rug covers the table. Its bright red makes the men's black clothes stand out.
The gloves
The 1991 restoration showed this is a pair of gloves, not a bag. Look for the fingers.
