She drains her glass, he keeps his hat on, and the woman in the window may be a sign of self-control.
In a room, a woman in a red dress raises a wine glass to her lips and drinks the last drop. Beside her, a gentleman in a black hat holds a jug, ready to pour more. A cittern lies on a chair, and music books lie on the table. Vermeer painted this around 1658–1661. It is now in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
This is one of Vermeer's early indoor scenes. He was probably influenced by Pieter de Hooch, another painter in Delft. The open window has stained glass with a coat of arms and a female figure. The straps she holds may be a bridle or straps for the coat of arms. If they are a bridle, she stands for Temperance, which can be a warning not to drink too much.
In the 18th century, the painting came to the famous Hope family, and they kept it until the end of the 19th century. After the family sold it around 1898, it passed through art dealers in London. In 1901, the Berlin museum bought it. Today the Gemäldegalerie has two Vermeers, this one and Woman with a Pearl Necklace.
A woman drinks wine. A man in a big hat waits. He wants to give her more. Look at the colored window. The woman in the glass may say, 'Don't drink too much!'
The Hope family, who owned this painting for a long time, also owned the famous blue Hope Diamond. At the end of the 19th century, Francis Hope sold the family's paintings, and a few years later he sold the diamond too.
The coat of arms in the stained glass is thought to belong to a Delft couple, Moijses van Nederveen and Janetge de Vogel. Recent research says she died in 1604 and he died in 1624, both before Vermeer was born. One theory says the painting was ordered as a wedding gift for their grandchildren.
He is indoors, but he keeps his big hat on. In the 17th-century Netherlands, a hat was a sign of a man's status and power. It is said that a man courting a woman did not take off his hat. So he was not being rude at all.
The woman in the stained glass is usually called Temperance, holding a bridle. But some experts think it is not a bridle at all, but the straps of a coat of arms. One small detail could change the meaning of the whole picture.
