Cupid appears on the wall! A hidden picture found during restoration.
Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window was painted by Vermeer around 1657–59. A girl stands in profile by an open window, lost in a letter. In front, there is a table with a rug and a bowl of fruit. A large green curtain hangs on the right, as if we were looking at a stage. On the wall behind her hangs a big picture of Cupid, the god of love.
For a long time, this wall was empty. In 1979, X-rays showed a hidden picture of Cupid under the paint. People believed Vermeer himself had painted over it. But in 2017, research showed that the paint on top was added by someone else, decades after Vermeer died.
So from 2018 to 2021, the museum carefully removed the added paint, little by little, using a microscope. Cupid came back just as Vermeer painted him and was shown to the public in 2021. This image shows the painting after the restoration. With Cupid watching, many think the girl is reading a love letter.

In 1742, Augustus III, ruler of Saxony and King of Poland, bought this painting. He thought it was by Rembrandt. In 1826, it was given to Pieter de Hooch. It was only in the later 19th century that people knew it was a Vermeer.
Between Vermeer's paint and the added paint, experts found layers of varnish and dirt. This showed the new paint was put on long after Vermeer's own paint had dried and gotten dirty. This discovery led the museum to bring Cupid back.
A very similar Cupid hangs on the wall in Vermeer's A Young Woman Standing at a Virginal in London. Experts think Vermeer used a real Cupid painting he owned as a 'picture within a picture' more than once.
At the end of World War II, Dresden's paintings were hidden in places like tunnels. The Soviet army found them and took them away. This painting came back to Dresden in 1955.
