A thin stream of milk, frozen in time! A masterpiece of a quiet kitchen.
The Milkmaid was painted by Vermeer around 1658. In a small kitchen lit by a window, a maid slowly pours milk from a jug into a bowl. She wears a yellow top and a blue apron, and there is bread on the table. The painting is only 45.5 cm high, but it is full of stillness, as if time has stopped.
Tiny dots of light cover the bread and the pottery, so they seem to sparkle. The blue apron is painted with expensive ultramarine. Recent scans show that Vermeer first painted a large fire basket on the floor and a rack for hanging jugs on the wall. Then he painted over them to make the scene simpler. One expert thinks the maid is making bread pudding.
For a long time, the painting belonged to the Six family. When it was sold in 1908, people across the country worried that a rich foreign collector might buy it. With help from the government and the Rembrandt Society, the Rijksmuseum bought it. It is still one of the museum's most important works, and crowds always gather in front of this small picture.
A woman is in a quiet kitchen. She is pouring milk slowly. Light comes in from the window. At first, Vermeer painted a basket on the floor. Then he painted over it!

Recent scans found a large fire basket on the floor at the lower right and a rack for hanging jugs on the wall behind her head. Vermeer painted over both and left a plain white wall. That's why the maid stands out so clearly.
Look closely at the small tiles at the bottom of the wall, near the foot warmer. One shows Cupid, the god of love, with his bow. Some scholars think the maid may be thinking about someone special.
In 1939, the painting was shown at the New York World's Fair. Then Germany occupied the Netherlands, so it could not go home. It stayed in the United States until the Netherlands was freed and was shown at places like the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
A tiny pinhole has been found in the painting. Experts think Vermeer put a pin there and snapped a chalked string from it to draw perspective lines. That may be the secret of the room's perfect depth.
