The town view Proust called 'the most beautiful painting in the world'.
View of Delft is a picture of Vermeer's hometown, painted around 1660. From the south, we look across the Kolk, a small harbor, at gates, houses and a church tower. More than half of the picture is cloudy sky. The buildings in front lie in the shadow of the clouds, while the tower of the New Church shines in the sun. This is Vermeer's only surviving wide view of Delft.
In 1654, a huge gunpowder explosion destroyed part of Delft. Vermeer painted the south side, which was not damaged. But it is not an exact copy of the real view. For example, he moved the New Church tower closer to the center to make it stand out. He added small dots of light on the boats and buildings and carefully painted the reflections in the water.
The painting sold at an auction in 1696 for 200 guilders. In 1822, the Dutch state bought it for 2,900 guilders, and it went to the Mauritshuis. The French writer Marcel Proust called it 'the most beautiful painting in the world'. In his novel In Search of Lost Time, a writer named Bergotte collapses in front of it.

In Proust's novel, the writer Bergotte is amazed by a 'little patch of yellow wall' in this painting, and then he collapses. Proust himself is said to have felt very ill while looking at this painting at an exhibition in Paris in 1921.
The sunlit tower of the New Church was moved closer to the center than it really was. Vermeer was baptized in this church. Even in a landscape, the artist changed the town to show what he wanted.
On the shore at the lower left, a few people are waiting for a boat. Studies show that Vermeer first painted a third person next to the two women, and then painted that person out.
Vermeer's initials, 'VM', are painted small inside the red part of the passenger boat at the lower left. He hid his signature right inside the scene. Can you find it?
