A woman in blue reads a letter. Is she expecting a baby?
A woman in a blue jacket stands by a window, reading a letter. Her lips are slightly open, as if she is holding her breath over every word. Pearls and a small box lie on the table, and a large map hangs on the wall. Who sent the letter, and what news does it bring? Vermeer painted this around 1663. It is now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
We cannot see the window, but light from the left softly falls on the wall and her face. Unusually for Vermeer's rooms, there is no floor, no ceiling and no corner. So our eyes go straight to the woman and her letter. The blue of her jacket is ultramarine, an expensive paint made from the stone lapis lazuli.
In 1854, the painting was left to Amsterdam's Academy of Fine Arts in a collector's will. It was transferred to the City of Amsterdam in 1885 and has been on loan to the Rijksmuseum since that year. During the restoration of 2010–2011, the yellowed varnish was removed, and the bright blue came back. After the restoration, it was first shown in Japan, in Kyoto, Sendai and Tokyo.
A woman reads a letter. She wears a blue jacket. There is a big map on the wall. Some people think she is going to have a baby. Others think it is just her dress.
Some people look at her round shape and think she is expecting a baby. Others say it is just fashion, because women wore many skirts and puffy jackets at that time. Pregnancy was rarely painted in this period, so the question is still open.
The 2010–2011 restoration showed that Vermeer painted a copper-green layer under the blue jacket. This hidden layer gives the blue its depth. Small details also came back, such as tiny nails on the chair's cover.
After its restoration, the painting traveled to Kyoto, Sendai and Tokyo in an exhibition that began in 2011. It was its first trip to Asia. In the autumn of 2011, the year of the Great East Japan Earthquake, it was shown at the Miyagi Museum of Art in Sendai.
The map on the wall shows the regions of Holland and West Friesland. It was published in 1620. The same map appears in Officer and Laughing Girl, but there it is in color. Here it is painted in brown, which makes the blue stand out.
