この作品のお話
Story窓から光が差しこむ部屋で、赤い服に大きな黒い帽子の士官と、白い頭巾の娘がテーブルをはさんで向かい合っています。娘はワイングラスを手に、楽しそうに笑っています。オランダの画家フェルメールが25歳ごろの1657年ごろに描いた作品です。今はニューヨークのフリック・コレクションにあります。
In a room lit by a window, an officer in a red coat and a big black hat sits across a table from a young woman in a white headscarf. She holds a wine glass and laughs happily. The Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer made this around 1657, when he was about 25. It is now in the Frick Collection in New York.
手前の士官は、背中を向けた黒っぽいかげになって、画面の左半分をおおっています。いっぽう奥の娘は、光を浴びて明るくかがやきます。近くの人を大きく暗く、遠くの人を小さく明るく描くことで、部屋の奥行きがぐっと強く感じられます。壁には、オランダのホラント州と西フリースラント地方の大きな地図がかかっています。
The officer in front is a dark shape with his back to us, and he fills the left half of the picture. The young woman behind him shines in the light. By making the near figure big and dark and the far figure small and bright, Vermeer gives the room a strong sense of depth. On the wall hangs a large map of Holland and West Friesland in the Netherlands.
この絵は、アメリカの鉄鋼王ヘンリー・クレイ・フリックが手に入れました。ニューヨークにあった彼の大邸宅は、死後そのまま美術館「フリック・コレクション」になり、この絵も今そこにかざられています。フリック・コレクションには、この絵をふくめてフェルメールの作品が3点あります。
The American steel businessman Henry Clay Frick bought this painting. After his death, his great mansion in New York became a museum, the Frick Collection, and the painting hangs there today. The Frick Collection owns three Vermeers, including this one.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets士官の大きな帽子は、高価なビーバーの毛皮で作られたと考えられています。当時ヨーロッパではビーバーがほとんど姿を消していたため、毛皮はカナダやシベリアなど遠い土地から運ばれたのかもしれません。遠くの国との貿易が、士官のおしゃれを支えていたのです。
The officer's large hat is thought to be made of expensive beaver fur. Beavers had almost disappeared from Europe, so the fur may have come from distant places such as Canada or Siberia. Long-distance trade made fashionable hats like this possible.
壁の地図は、1620年代に出版された、ホラント州と西フリースラントの地図です。上が西、つまり海の側になっています。同じ地図はフェルメールのほかの絵にも登場するので、フェルメールが自宅に持っていたのでは、と考えられています。
The map on the wall is a real map of Holland and West Friesland published in the 1620s. West, the sea side, is at the top. The same map appears in other Vermeer paintings, so he may have owned it.
X線で調べると、フェルメールははじめ、娘に服の多くをかくす大きな白いえりを描こうとしていたことがわかりました。また、頭巾をのばして髪をかくすように描き直しています。細かな変更をくり返して、今の姿にたどり着いたのです。
X-rays show that Vermeer first planned a large white collar that would hide much of her dress. He also made her headscarf longer to cover her hair. Many small changes led to the picture we see today.
手前の士官と奥の娘の大きさの差は、まるでカメラのレンズで近くから写したようです。そのため、フェルメールがカメラの原型「カメラ・オブスクラ」を使ったという説があります。ただし、それを示す記録は見つかっていません。
The size difference between the officer in front and the woman behind him looks like a photo taken close up with a camera lens. That is why some think Vermeer used a camera obscura, an early form of the camera. But no record has been found to prove it.
