この作品のお話
Story「ラス・メニーナス」は、スペイン王フェリペ4世の宮廷画家ベラスケスが1656年に描いた大作です。マドリードの王宮の広い部屋で、5歳のマルガリータ王女がまん中に立ち、そのまわりを女官（メニーナ）たちや、宮廷に仕えたマリ・バルボラとニコラシート・ペルトゥサート、大きな犬がかこんでいます。左はしには、大きなカンヴァスの前で筆とパレットを持つベラスケス自身がいます。
Las Meninas is a huge painting made in 1656 by Velázquez, court painter to King Philip IV of Spain. In a large room in the royal palace in Madrid, five-year-old Princess Margarita stands in the center. Around her are her maids of honor (meninas), the court attendants Mari Bárbola and Nicolasito Pertusato, and a big dog. On the far left, Velázquez himself stands with a brush and palette in front of a huge canvas.
奥の壁の鏡には、王と王妃の姿がうつっています。2人は私たちが立っている場所にいて、画家に描かれているところだ、という解釈がよく知られていますが、今も議論があります。画家はだれを描いているのか？私たちは絵を見ているのか、絵に見られているのか？近くで見るとあらい筆のあとなのに、離れると本物の布や光に見えるのも見どころです。
In the mirror on the back wall, we see the king and queen. A well-known idea is that they are standing where we are, while the painter paints them. But experts still debate this. Who is the painter painting? Are we looking at the picture, or is the picture looking at us? Up close, the brushstrokes are rough. But from a distance, they turn into real cloth and light.
1734年、王宮が火事で焼けたとき、この絵は救い出されましたが傷つき、王女の左のほおなどが修復家によって描き直されました。今はマドリードのプラド美術館の宝です。画家ルカ・ジョルダーノは「絵画の神学」とたたえ、ピカソは1957年に、この絵をもとにした44点をふくむ58点の連作を描きました。
In 1734, the palace burned. The painting was saved but damaged, and a restorer repainted parts of it, including the princess's left cheek. Today it is a treasure of the Prado Museum in Madrid. The painter Luca Giordano called it 'the theology of painting'. In 1957, Picasso made a series of 58 works, and 44 of them are based on it.

Secretsベラスケスの胸には、サンティアゴ騎士団の赤い十字があります。でも彼が騎士団に入ったのは1659年、絵の完成の3年後です。王の命令で彼の死後に描き足されたと伝えられ、王自身が筆をとったという言い伝えもあります。
On Velázquez's chest is the red cross of the Order of Santiago. But he joined the order in 1659, three years after the painting was finished. It is said that the king had it added after the painter died. One legend says the king painted it himself.
1957年の8月から12月にかけて、ピカソは58点の連作を描き、そのうち44点がこの絵をもとにした作品です。全体を描きかえたもの、王女だけを描いたもの、犬を自分の愛犬にかえたものも。残りはハトや風景などの絵です。連作はバルセロナのピカソ美術館にあります。
From August to December 1957, Picasso made a series of 58 works, and 44 of them are based on this painting. Some show the whole scene, some show only the princess, and in some he changed the dog to his own pet dog. The others show doves, landscapes and more. The series is in the Picasso Museum in Barcelona.
赤外線で調べると、ベラスケスは最初、自分の頭を今とは反対の向きに描いていたことがわかりました。描きながら考えを変え、こちらをまっすぐ見つめる今のポーズにしたのです。画家の迷いのあとが、絵の下に残っています。
Infrared images show that Velázquez first painted his own head turned the other way. While working, he changed his mind and chose the pose we see now, looking straight at us. Traces of that change remain under the paint.
1930年代のスペイン内戦のとき、プラド美術館の名画はマドリードから運び出され、この絵もスイスのジュネーブへ避難しました。巨大な絵を戦火から守るための大移動でした。
During the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, the Prado's masterpieces were taken out of Madrid. This painting was moved all the way to Geneva, Switzerland, to keep it safe.
