A little prince rides a rearing horse! The horse's round belly has a reason.
A little prince sits on a horse that is rearing up on its back legs. He is Prince Balthasar Charles, the eldest son of King Philip IV of Spain, and he is about five or six years old. He holds a commander's baton and wears a pink sash. Behind him are the Guadarrama mountains near Madrid. Velázquez painted this around 1634–1635. It is now in the Prado Museum.
It was painted for the Hall of Realms, a great hall in the Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid. It hung high above a door, between large horse portraits of his father, Philip IV, and his mother, Queen Elisabeth. The young prince, the future of the royal family, rides proudly between his parents.
But Balthasar Charles died in 1646, at only sixteen, and he never became king. In this painting, Velázquez began to use brighter, clearer colors than before. The blues and whites of the sky and snowy mountains are painted with quick, light strokes. In the painting, the young prince is still riding toward his future.
A little prince rides a horse. He is five or six years old. The horse raises its front legs. Look at its big, round belly! People saw this picture from below, so it looks right from there.

The horse's belly is much rounder than a real horse's. This is because the painting hung high above a door. Velázquez probably made the belly bigger on purpose so it would look right when people looked up at it from below.
The prince was supposed to marry his cousin Mariana. But after he died, Mariana married his father, Philip IV. Their daughter was Margarita, the princess in the blue dress.
The stick in his right hand is a commander's baton. He also has a sword and a military sash. By showing a small child as a strong leader, the painting showed off the power of the royal family.
A horse rising on its back legs shows a high level of riding skill. It was often used in royal portraits as a sign of the power to rule a country well. A little prince riding like this was a promise of a great future king.
