The eggs are cooking right now! A kitchen by 19-year-old Velázquez.
In a dark kitchen, an old woman in a white head cloth is cooking eggs in a clay dish. On the left, a boy holds a melon tied with string and a glass bottle. Velázquez painted this in 1618, when he was about 19. It is now a treasure of the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh.
At this time, Velázquez had just finished his training with the painter Pacheco in Seville. In the same year, 1618, he married Pacheco's daughter, Juana. Kitchen scenes were often seen as less important than pictures of kings or saints. But Velázquez painted shiny brass, rough pottery and eggs cooking, all as real as life.
His strong contrast of light and shadow is said to show the influence of the Italian painter Caravaggio. The painting belonged to private owners in Britain for a long time. The Scottish National Gallery bought it in 1955. It is like a showcase of skills by a young man who would later paint kings.
An old woman cooks eggs. A boy holds a big melon. Look at the eggs. They are just turning white! Velázquez painted this when he was about 19.
In the clay dish, the egg whites are just turning white. You must watch eggs very closely to paint this moment. And the old woman already holds the next egg in her hand.
The old woman and the boy are side by side, but their eyes never meet. Each one looks in a different direction, as if time has stopped. This silent moment gives the picture a strange calm.
Some say this boy is the same model as the boy in 'The Waterseller of Seville'. The old woman may also appear in 'Christ in the House of Martha and Mary' in the National Gallery, London. Young Velázquez seems to have painted the same people again and again.
A brass mortar and pestle, a white plate and a knife, an onion, red chilies and a hanging basket. Metal, pottery and vegetables all shine in different ways. The young painter seems to be showing off his skill.
