Too true!' A portrait so sharp it may have shocked the Pope.
This portrait of Pope Innocent X was painted by the Spanish artist Velázquez in Rome around 1650. The Pope was about 75 years old. He sits in a chair with gold decorations, wearing a red cap, a shiny red cape and a white robe. Against a red background, his sharp eyes stare straight at us.
Velázquez had come to Italy for the second time, sent by King Philip IV of Spain to buy art for the royal collection. It is said that the Pope did not want to be painted at first. Look at all the reds: shiny silk, a heavy curtain, the pink of his skin. Velázquez painted each kind of red with quick brushstrokes.
The painting stayed with the Pope's family, the Pamphilj, and it still hangs in their family palace in Rome, now the Galleria Doria Pamphilj. The 19th-century critic Hippolyte Taine called it 'the masterpiece amongst all portraits'. In the 20th century, the British painter Francis Bacon based his 'Screaming Popes' series on it.

When the Pope saw the finished portrait, he is said to have cried, 'È troppo vero!', which means 'It's too true!' in Italian. It could be praise or a complaint. But some experts doubt that the story is true.
The paper in the Pope's left hand is meant to be a letter to him. On it, Velázquez wrote his own name. He cleverly used a small object in the picture as his signature.
The painter Francis Bacon was obsessed with this portrait. He made more than 45 pictures of the Pope based on it, and many show him as if he were screaming. Yet he is said to have avoided seeing the real painting on purpose.
On the same trip, Velázquez painted his assistant, Juan de Pareja. Some say it helped him get the Pope's order. In 1970, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York bought the Pareja portrait for 5.5 million dollars, a record price for a painting at the time.
