Story

In the Old Testament, the Queen of Sheba travels to visit King Solomon of Israel, who was famous for his wisdom. Here she is about to set sail. She and her attendants are near the palace steps on the right. But the real star is the sun rising over the harbor and the sea shining in its light. It is an ancient story, but the buildings and ships look like those of the 17th century.

Claude was born in Lorraine in eastern France, so he was called "Lorrain." He lived in Rome from a young age and painted Italian landscapes full of light. This painting was made for the Duke of Bouillon as a pair with "Landscape with the Marriage of Isaac and Rebecca." Claude was especially admired for painting the sun itself and filling the air with its light.

Claude's paintings became very popular, especially in Britain. In the 18th century, British travelers even carried a dark mirror called a "Claude glass" to see landscapes like his paintings. The 19th-century painter Turner admired Claude deeply. In his will, he asked that his own painting hang next to this one. The two still hang side by side in the National Gallery in London.

This is a big harbor in the morning. The sun is coming up over the sea. A queen is going on a long trip by ship. The painter Turner loved this picture. He wanted his painting next to it!
