His real name was Claude Gellée. He is called 'Lorrain' because he was born in Chamagne, in the Lorraine region. As a young man he went to Rome, and he spent his life in Italy. He painted dreamlike landscapes of ancient buildings and harbors bathed in golden morning or evening light. His landscapes later had a big influence on British landscape painters and even on garden design.
