The great altarpiece in Antwerp that Nello longed to see in A Dog of Flanders.
The Descent from the Cross shows Jesus's followers and family lowering his body from the cross. They hold it in a long white cloth. This is the central panel of a large altarpiece made of three panels in the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp, Belgium. It is more than four meters tall. It was painted by Rubens, a great Baroque painter who worked in this city.
The altarpiece was ordered by the city's guild of arquebusiers, soldiers who used early guns. The contract was signed in 1611. Their patron saint was Saint Christopher, who is said to have carried the child Christ across a river. His name means 'Christ-bearer.' So Rubens filled every panel with scenes of carrying Christ. He used the powerful bodies and the strong light and shadow he had studied during about eight years in Italy.
In 1794, the French army took the painting to Paris, but it came back to Antwerp in 1815. The cathedral also has Rubens's Raising of the Cross. In A Dog of Flanders, a story by the English writer Ouida that came out as a book in 1872, Nello is a poor boy who loves art. He has no money to see these two paintings, but he finally sees them on Christmas night. The story is well known in Japan because of a 1975 anime. Today, a statue of Nello and his dog Patrasche stands in front of the cathedral.
This is a very big painting in a church in Belgium. People take Jesus down from a cross. They hold him in a long white cloth. In the story A Dog of Flanders, a boy named Nello wants to see this painting. He sees it at last on Christmas night.

The left panel shows Mary, pregnant with Jesus, visiting her relative Elizabeth. The right panel shows baby Jesus being held in the temple. When the panels are closed, the outside shows Saint Christopher carrying Christ. Together with the center, every scene is about carrying Christ.
At the lower left, Mary Magdalene, with golden hair, holds Christ's foot. It rests gently on her shoulder. His mother Mary, in blue, reaches out, and John, in red, takes the weight of the body. Each person supports Christ in their own way.
Look closely at the white-haired man leaning out at the top right. He is holding the edge of the cloth in his teeth! You can feel the tension of lowering the heavy body little by little. Rubens brought this kind of real physical effort into a holy scene.
Rogier van der Weyden's Descent from the Cross (c. 1435), also in our museum, shows the same scene. Weyden lined up the figures calmly, as if in a shallow box. Rubens built a big diagonal movement around the white cloth. Side by side, they show how Flemish painting changed in about 180 years.
