今のドイツのジーゲンで生まれ、少年のころ一家でアントウェルペンにもどりました。イタリアで8年ほど学び、帰国後は大きな工房を開いて、ヨーロッパ中の王や教会のために、力強く動きのある大きな絵を次々に描きました。いくつもの言葉を話し、外交官としてもイギリスとスペインの和平の交渉にかかわりました。アントウェルペンで亡くなりました。
Rubens was born in Siegen, in today's Germany. As a boy, he returned to Antwerp with his family. He studied in Italy for about eight years. Back home, he ran a large workshop and painted huge, energetic pictures for kings and churches across Europe. He spoke several languages and also worked as a diplomat, helping peace talks between England and Spain. He died in Antwerp.
