Cupids everywhere! A painter celebrates his new marriage with a grand garden party.
In a grand garden, well-dressed men and women gather to chat and enjoy music. Little winged cupids fly down from the sky and play at their feet, helping love along. The great Flemish painter Rubens, who worked in Antwerp in what is now Belgium, made this picture around 1633. The painting is now in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain.
After his first wife died, Rubens married 16-year-old Helena Fourment in 1630. This painting is thought to celebrate the joy of his new marriage. The man on the far left is said to be Rubens himself, and the woman he guides is said to be Helena. The stone gateway behind them looks like the garden gate at Rubens's own house in Antwerp.
After Rubens died in 1640, the painting went to the Spanish royal family. A record from 1666 shows it hung in the king's bedroom. Its world of elegant couples enjoying themselves outdoors is said to have looked ahead to the 'fête galante', a type of painting later made by French artists such as Watteau.

Rubens worked with the woodcut maker Christoffel Jegher to make a large woodcut based on this painting, with the figures and buildings rearranged. It was so big that it was printed on two sheets of paper joined together. Thanks to prints, many artists could see this 'Garden of Love' world.
