Rembrandt's only seascape has been missing for over 30 years. Only an empty frame remains.
Huge waves are about to swallow a small boat. The sail is torn, and the men hold on to the ropes for their lives. In the dark on the right, Jesus has just woken up, with his followers around him. In the New Testament, this is the moment just before Jesus calms the storm. Rembrandt painted it in 1633, when he was about 27. It is said to be his only seascape.
A diagonal line splits the picture in two. The left side is full of light and white spray, and the right side is in dark shadow. In the light, men fight the storm. In the shadow, some men are afraid and some pray. With this drama of light and dark, the young Rembrandt showed both fear and faith in one picture.
In 1898, this painting came to the Boston collector Isabella Stewart Gardner. But on the night of March 18, 1990, two men dressed as police officers got into the museum and stole 13 works, including this one. The canvas was cut from its frame, and it has never been found. The museum offers a reward of 10 million dollars for information.

Jesus and his 12 followers make 13 people. But there are said to be 14 people in the boat. The extra man holds his cap and looks straight at us. He is thought to be Rembrandt himself.
In 1990, two men pretending to be police officers tied up the guards and took 13 works in 81 minutes. The loss is said to be worth over 500 million dollars, the largest art theft in US history. No one has been arrested, and more than 30 years later the paintings are still missing.
In her will, Gardner said the displays must not be changed. So today the museum still hangs empty frames where the stolen paintings used to be. They are waiting for the day the paintings come home.
Vermeer's 'The Concert' was stolen from the same room. The thieves also took works by Manet and Degas, and even an ancient Chinese bronze vessel. Their choices seem random, and what they really wanted is still a mystery.
