A thinker rests his hand on a poet's bust. In 1961, it set a world auction record for a painting!
A man in a black hat and white sleeves rests his hand on the head of a marble bust. He seems lost in quiet thought. He is the ancient Greek thinker Aristotle, and the bust shows the legendary poet Homer. The Dutch painter Rembrandt made this in 1653. It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
It was ordered by Don Antonio Ruffo, a nobleman on the Italian island of Sicily. Rembrandt's fame had reached an island far away in the Mediterranean. Aristotle wears a gold chain with a medal showing the face of Alexander the Great, his former student. One hand is on the poet's bust, and the other is on the king's chain. He may be thinking about learning and fame.
After the Ruffo family, the painting passed through owners in Britain and the United States. In 1961, it came up for auction in New York. The Metropolitan Museum bought it for 2.3 million dollars. At that time, it was the highest price ever paid for a painting at auction. The price became news around the world.

At an auction in New York in 1961, the Metropolitan Museum bought this painting for 2.3 million dollars. It was a record price for a painting at auction, and it was big news. Newspapers and TV reported it, and crowds are said to have come to the museum to see it.
Aristotle was the teacher of Alexander the Great when Alexander was young. The medal on his gold chain shows Alexander's face. So three famous Greeks, a thinker, a poet and a king, meet in this one painting.
Ruffo also asked the Italian painter Guercino to make a picture to go with this one. About ten years later, he ordered 'Homer' and 'Alexander the Great' from Rembrandt himself. He probably wanted a row of great figures on the walls of his palace.
People have argued for a long time about who this man is. Some have suggested other names, such as the ancient painter Apelles. Today, mainly because of the Ruffo family records, most agree that he is Aristotle.
