It was actually daytime!? The world's most famous group portrait.
The Night Watch is a huge painting that Rembrandt finished in 1642. It is about 3.8 meters high and 4.5 meters wide. It is a group portrait of a civic guard company, citizens who helped defend Amsterdam. The man in black in the center is Captain Banninck Cocq. Next to him, in bright yellow, is his lieutenant. At the captain's command, the company is about to march.
The captain and seventeen members paid for it. Records say each paid about 100 guilders, 1,600 guilders in total. Many earlier civic-guard portraits looked like class photos, with the men standing neatly in rows. But Rembrandt painted a scene full of action, like a moment in a play. One man waves a flag, one loads his gun, and another beats a drum. The strong contrast of light and shadow is another highlight.
'The Night Watch' is a nickname given later. Over time, the varnish on the surface turned dark, so the scene looked like night. In fact, it is daytime. In 1715, the painting was cut on all four sides to fit a wall in the town hall, and two men on the left were lost. Today it is the star of the Rijksmuseum. Since 2019, experts have studied and restored it in front of visitors in a project called Operation Night Watch.
This is a very big painting. It shows a group of men with guns and flags. Its name is The Night Watch. But it is not a night scene! Old varnish and dirt made it look dark, so people thought it was night.

We know what the full painting looked like from a small copy by Gerrit Lundens, painted in the 17th century. In 2021, the museum used AI and the copy to recreate the missing parts. For a few months, these parts were shown around the real painting, and the two lost men came back.
The painting was attacked with knives in 1911 and 1975, and with acid in 1990. In 1975, it was left with deep cuts up to about 30 cm long, and it was repaired in 1975–76. In 1990, guards quickly washed the acid off with water, so most of the damage stayed in the varnish.
When World War II began in 1939, the canvas was taken off its frame and rolled onto a tube. For about four years, it was kept in a safe inside a cave in Maastricht, in the south of the Netherlands.
The little girl in the light has a dead chicken hanging from her belt. It is actually a symbol of the company. The emblem of the arquebusiers, or gunmen, was a bird's claw. The girl seems to work like a mascot for the group.
