この絵は、1665〜69年ごろ、60歳前後のレンブラントが描いた自画像です。白い帽子に毛皮のついた上着を着て、片手にパレットと筆、腕を支える棒（マールスティック）を持ち、もう片方の手を腰に当てています。背後の壁には、大きな円が2つ。ロンドンのケンウッド・ハウスで見ることができます。

Rembrandt painted this self-portrait around 1665–69, when he was about 60. He wears a white cap and a coat lined with fur. In one hand, he holds his palette, brushes and a maulstick, a stick that steadies the painting hand. His other hand rests on his hip. On the wall behind him are two large circles. You can see it at Kenwood House in London.

このころのレンブラントは破産し、家や集めた美術品を手放しました。妻サスキアは1642年、伴侶ヘンドリッキェは1663年に亡くなり、1668年には息子ティトゥスも亡くします。それでも絵筆は止まらず、自分の顔を描き続けます。油絵の自画像だけで40点以上。若いころの自信にあふれた姿から、しわの深い晩年の顔まで、人生をまるごと記録したのです。

In his later years, Rembrandt went bankrupt and lost his house and his art collection. His wife Saskia died in 1642 and his partner Hendrickje in 1663. In 1668, his son Titus also died. But he never stopped painting himself. He made more than 40 painted self-portraits. From a confident young man to a wrinkled old face, he recorded his whole life.

手やパレットは、すばやいタッチでざっくりと描かれ、口ひげなどには、ぬれた絵の具を引っかいた線も見えます。サインと年号がないのも、彼にしてはめずらしいことです。18世紀イギリスの画家ジョシュア・レノルズは、この「仕上げきらない描き方」をほめました。のちにアイヴィー伯爵が手に入れ、1927年に屋敷ごと国に遺贈されました。

The hands and palette are painted with quick, rough strokes. In places like his mustache, he scratched lines into the wet paint. There is no signature or date, which is unusual for him. The 18th-century English painter Joshua Reynolds praised this 'very unfinished manner'. Later, the Earl of Iveagh bought it, and in 1927 it was left to the nation with Kenwood House.
