Newly married Rembrandt raises a glass! But he is playing the Bible's wasteful son.
A man in a hat with big feathers raises a tall glass and turns to us with a big laugh. A young woman in fine clothes sits on his lap. The man is thought to be Rembrandt himself, and the woman his wife, Saskia. It was painted around 1635 and is now in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, Germany.
This is not just a portrait of a couple. It shows a scene from the Bible story of the Prodigal Son. A young man takes his share of his father's money and wastes it all in a faraway city. Rembrandt cast himself as that son. On the table is a peacock pie, a sign of luxury. His sword and showy clothes also show a careless life.
Rembrandt had married Saskia in 1634 and was very successful as a painter. The left side of this painting was cut off, perhaps by Rembrandt himself, and other figures were probably there at first. About thirty years later, near the end of his life, he painted the end of the same story, The Return of the Prodigal Son.
A man laughs and holds up a glass. A woman sits on his lap. The man is the painter, Rembrandt. The woman is his wife, Saskia. They are acting out a story from the Bible.
Rembrandt painted dozens of self-portraits and several portraits of Saskia. But this is said to be the only oil painting that shows the two of them together. It is the newlyweds' one and only 'couple photo.'
We know that the left side of this painting was cut off. Some extra figures were probably there at first. Rembrandt himself may have cut it, and this made our eyes go straight to the couple.
On the table on the left is a pie decorated with a peacock's head and feathers. It was a fancy dish at that time and also a sign of luxury and pride. Behind the couple's fun, there is a hidden warning: 'Be careful not to get carried away.'
Records show that in 1638, Rembrandt went to court against relatives who said Saskia had wasted her inheritance by showing off. It sounds a little like the wasteful son he plays in this painting.
