An older man in a black beret turns slightly and looks at us steadily. This is a self-portrait the Dutch painter Rembrandt made in 1659, when he was 53. He sits with his hands folded and wears a coat lined with fur. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
若いころのレンブラントは大人気の画家で、大きな家に住み、美術品をたくさん集めていました。けれど1656年、借金を返せない状態になったと申し立て、家もコレクションも競売にかけられました。この絵は、その数年後のものです。顔のしわやむくみ、肌の赤みまで、厚くぬった絵の具でありのままに描いています。
When he was young, Rembrandt was a very popular painter. He lived in a big house and collected many works of art. But in 1656 he declared that he could not pay his debts. His house and his collection were sold at auction. This picture was painted a few years later. With thick paint, he showed his wrinkles, the puffiness of his face and the redness of his skin just as they were.
この絵は長くイギリスの公爵家にあり、1929年にアメリカの富豪アンドリュー・メロンが買いました。メロンは自分のコレクションを国に贈り、それをもとにナショナル・ギャラリー・オブ・アートが生まれます。この自画像も1937年、美術館に贈られた作品の一つです。
For a long time the painting belonged to a family of English dukes. In 1929, the rich American Andrew Mellon bought it. Mellon gave his collection to the nation, and the National Gallery of Art was founded with it. This self-portrait was given to the museum in 1937.

Secrets調査によると、レンブラントは最初、明るい色の帽子をかぶった姿を描き、あとから黒いベレー帽に描きかえました。明るい帽子は、絵を描くときの仕事着のような帽子だったのでは、という見方もあります。
Studies show that Rembrandt first painted himself in a light-colored cap and later changed it to a black beret. Some think the light cap was the kind he wore while working as a painter.
レンブラント研究者のエルンスト・ファン・デ・ウェテリンクは、この顔の絵の具を「まるでひげそりブラシでぬったようだ」と表現しました。髪の毛には、筆のおしりでぬれた絵の具を引っかいたあとも残っています。
The Rembrandt expert Ernst van de Wetering said the paint on this face seems to have been put on 'with a shaving brush.' In the hair, you can also find lines where he scratched the wet paint with the end of his brush.
レンブラントの自画像の油絵は、今およそ40点が知られています。版画や素描も合わせると約80点。若いころから晩年まで、さまざまな年齢の顔が並び、まるで顔で書いた日記のようです。この絵は、その中でも特によく知られる一枚です。
About 40 painted self-portraits by Rembrandt are known today. With his prints and drawings, there are around 80. They show his face at many different ages, like a diary written with his face. This is one of the best known of them all.
同じころに描かれた、題名も同じ自画像が、イギリスのスコットランド国立美術館にもあります。そちらのほうが仕上げがていねいで、こちらはより大胆な筆づかいです。2枚をくらべると、レンブラントの描き方の幅がよくわかります。
