迷路門の上の石板は本物！今もデルフトに残る、370年前の中庭のひとコマ。The stone tablet over the gate is real! A moment in a Delft courtyard, 370 years ago.

Storyれんがの中庭で、女中が小さな女の子の手を引いています。左のアーチの奥の通路には、黒と赤の服の女性が立ち、道のほうをながめています。オランダの画家ピーテル・デ・ホーホが1658年に描いた作品です。今はロンドンのナショナル・ギャラリーにあります。
In a brick courtyard, a maid holds the hand of a little girl. Through the arch on the left, a woman in black and red stands in a passage and looks toward the street. The Dutch painter Pieter de Hooch made this in 1658. It is now in the National Gallery in London.
デ・ホーホは、オランダの町の家の中や中庭を描いた画家です。この絵では、手前の中庭、アーチの通路、その先の明るい道と、空間が奥へ奥へと続いていきます。床のれんがや石畳のならびが、見る人の目を自然に奥へ導きます。アーチの上の石板は、デルフトに実在した修道院の門にあったものです。
De Hooch painted the insides and courtyards of Dutch town houses. In this picture, the space goes deeper and deeper: the courtyard in front, the passage through the arch, and the bright street beyond. The lines of bricks and paving stones lead our eyes into the distance. The stone tablet above the arch really hung over the gate of a monastery in Delft.
絵は1825年までオランダにあり、その年、画商ブロンジーストがイギリスのエマーソンのために買いました。のちにイギリスの政治家ロバート・ピールの持ち物になります。1871年、ピール家のコレクションとともにナショナル・ギャラリーに入ります。同じころデルフトで活動したフェルメールも、デ・ホーホの描く町の空間から刺激を受けたといわれます。
The painting stayed in the Netherlands until 1825, when the dealer W. Brondgeest bought it for W. Emmerson. Later it belonged to the British politician Sir Robert Peel. In 1871, it went to the National Gallery with the Peel family's collection. Vermeer, who worked in Delft at the same time, is said to have been inspired by the way De Hooch painted town spaces.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsアーチの上の石板は、デルフトにあった聖ヒエロニムス修道院の入口にかけられていたもので、1614年の年が入っています。この本物の石板は今もデルフトに残り、アウデ・デルフト157番地の裏庭の壁にはめこまれています。絵の中の物が、現実に見られるのです。
The stone tablet above the arch once hung at the entrance of the Hieronymusdal monastery in Delft. It is dated 1614. The real tablet still survives in Delft. It is now set into a garden wall behind 157 Oude Delft. You can see the object from the painting in real life.
石板には、聖ヒエロニムスの谷にちなんだ言葉が書かれ、「高く上げられたいなら、まず低くへりくだらなければならない」という意味だとされます。葉っぱに半分かくれていて、デ・ホーホがなぜこれを描いたのかは、はっきりしていません。
The tablet has words about the Vale of Saint Jerome. They are said to mean, 'We must first go down if we wish to be raised up.' Leaves partly cover it, and it is not clear why De Hooch included it.
デ・ホーホは同じ1658年ごろ、同じ石板と建物の中庭をもう1枚描いています。そちらは人がくつろぐ場面で、犬も登場します。その絵は個人のコレクションにあり、クリスティーズのオークションで440万ポンドで売られました。
Around the same time, De Hooch painted another courtyard with the same tablet and buildings. In that one, people relax, and a dog appears. It is in a private collection and sold at a Christie's auction for 4.4 million pounds.
右下には、ほうきとバケツが置かれています。当時のオランダの絵では、ほうきは「よく片づいた、きちんとした家庭」を表すと解釈されることがあります。何気ない道具にも、オランダの人びとが大切にした暮らしの価値観がこめられているのです。
A broom and a bucket sit at the lower right. In Dutch paintings of the time, a broom can be seen as a sign of a clean and well-run home. Even simple tools show the values of everyday life that Dutch people cared about.
