De Hooch was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. His father was a bricklayer and his mother a midwife. He moved to Delft in 1652 and joined the city's painters' guild in 1655. He painted women and children at home and in courtyards, with soft light and spaces that lead your eye deeper and deeper. Vermeer, who lived in Delft at the same time, painted similar subjects. Around 1660 De Hooch moved to Amsterdam, where he also painted grand interiors.
