Figures appear out of deep darkness as if lit by a spotlight. The Dutch painter Rembrandt controlled light and shadow to create theater-like drama in his pictures. His masterpiece, The Night Watch, is nearly four meters tall and wide. It shows a city militia company with flags and drums, ready to march off the canvas.
Rembrandt became one of the most popular painters in Amsterdam while still young. But he lost his beloved wife and later went bankrupt, partly because he collected too much art. Throughout his career, he made about 80 self-portraits in paintings, prints and drawings. They were not simply a diary. They also helped him study expressions and light, and try out how to present himself as an artist. Let's follow the changes from his proud young face to his deeply lined old one.
