The painting Van Gogh reportedly said was worth ten years of his life.
This is a masterpiece from Rembrandt's last years. A richly dressed man gently places his hand on a woman's chest. She softly touches his hand with her own. They do not look at each other. Each seems lost in thought, and we feel a quiet, deep love. The title "The Jewish Bride" is a nickname given later. No one knows who the couple really are.
In the 1650s, Rembrandt went bankrupt. He had to sell his house and his art collection. But in his last years, he found an even freer way of painting. He built up the man's golden sleeve with thick paint, using a palette knife as well as brushes. Up close, it looks like lumps of paint. From a distance, it becomes shining cloth.
In the early 19th century, an Amsterdam collector thought it showed a Jewish father giving his daughter a necklace on her wedding day. The name stuck, but experts no longer accept this idea. In 1885, Van Gogh saw it at the newly opened Rijksmuseum and was deeply moved. It is still one of the museum's most famous works.
A man and a woman stand close together. He puts his hand on her gently. She touches his hand. Rembrandt painted the man's gold sleeve with very thick paint. Van Gogh loved this picture very much!

In 1885, Van Gogh visited the Rijksmuseum with his friend Anton Kerssemakers and spent a long time in front of this painting. The friend later recalled that Van Gogh said he would give ten years of his life to sit in front of it for two weeks with only dry bread to eat.
Today, many experts think it shows a real couple dressed as Isaac and Rebecca from the Old Testament. Rembrandt made a drawing of Isaac and Rebecca a few years earlier, and the poses are very similar.
Some think the models were Rembrandt's son Titus and his bride Magdalena. Titus married in 1668 but died the same year. Others suggest the poet Miguel de Barrios and his wife. The question is still open.
Scientific studies suggest that Rembrandt first planned a larger, more detailed scene. He simplified it until our eyes go straight to the two people's hands. At the lower right is a faint signature and an incomplete date: "Rembrandt f. 16..".
