This painting was made by the French artist Georges de La Tour around 1636–40. Four people are around a table, playing cards. The young man on the right, in fancy clothes, comes from a rich family. The woman in the center, the servant bringing wine and the man on the left are working together. Behind his back, the man on the left is pulling the ace of diamonds from his belt.
At that time, artists often painted a lesson: a young man who knows little of the world is ruined by gambling, wine and temptation. La Tour makes the figures stand out clearly against a dark background, with smooth, simple faces. Instead of words, sideways glances tell the story.
After his death, La Tour was forgotten for a long time and was only rediscovered in the 20th century. This painting entered the Louvre in 1972. The Kimbell Art Museum in the United States has another version, The Cheat with the Ace of Clubs. It has almost the same design, with differences in the details.
Four people are playing cards. The young man on the right is rich. But look at the man on the left! He is hiding cards behind his back. The two women are helping him cheat!
The woman in the center glances at the servant, and the servant looks back at her. The man on the left looks out at us, as if saying, 'Did you see that?' There are no words, but their eyes show us how they work as a team.
In his lifetime, La Tour was called a painter to the King of France. But after he died, even his name was forgotten, and his works were credited to other artists. In 1915, the German art historian Hermann Voss identified his paintings and brought him back into the light.
The Cheat with the Ace of Clubs, at the Kimbell Art Museum in Texas, is another version, probably painted around 1630–34. There, the hidden card is the ace of clubs. Many details, like colors and clothes, are different. Try a spot-the-difference game!
Card cheating became a popular subject after Caravaggio's The Cardsharps. Amazingly, the Kimbell Art Museum owns both Caravaggio's The Cardsharps and La Tour's 'Ace of Clubs' version.
