Girl with a Pearl Earring was painted around 1665 by the Dutch artist Vermeer. Against a dark background, a girl turns to look at us over her shoulder, her lips slightly open. She wears a blue and yellow turban and a large pearl earring. In fact, this is not a portrait of a specific, named person. It is a 'tronie', a type of picture made to show a face, a look or a costume.
The blue of the turban is ultramarine, a very expensive paint made from the crushed stone lapis lazuli. The pearl is only a few strokes of white paint, yet it seems to really shine. Only about 35 paintings by Vermeer survive, and no one knows who the model was. That mystery adds to the painting's charm.
In 1881, the painting was in poor condition when it came up at an auction. A collector, Arnoldus des Tombe, bought it for just two guilders and thirty cents. In 1902, he left it to the Mauritshuis. It became a novel in 1999 and a film in 2003. Today, it is called the 'Mona Lisa of the North' and is one of the most loved paintings in the Netherlands.

At the 1881 auction, the painting was dirty and damaged, and few people paid attention. Des Tombe bought it on an expert's advice for two guilders, plus a thirty-cent fee. Today it is a priceless national treasure.
In 2018, a big research project called 'Girl in the Spotlight' found that the dark background was once a green curtain. The researchers also found tiny eyelashes that we cannot see with our eyes.
This 'pearl' is very large for a real one. In 2014, the astrophysicist Vincent Icke said that the way it reflects light looks more like polished tin. Some people think it may have been a fake pearl.
In 2014, the secret street artist Banksy painted a parody of this picture on a wall in Bristol, England. He called it 'Girl with a Pierced Eardrum'. A real security alarm box on the wall became her earring!
