Story

A woman has been writing at a table when her maid holds out another letter. The woman stops writing and raises a hand to her chin, perhaps with concern. She wears a yellow jacket trimmed with fur, a pearl earring and a pearl necklace. The Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer made this around 1664 to 1667. It is now in the Frick Collection in New York.

The background is a curtain whose colors have darkened over time. With no details there, the light gathers on the two faces, their hands and the letter. The mistress seems worried, and the maid seems about to say something. The painting does not tell us who wrote the letter or what it says, so we must imagine the story. Compared with many of Vermeer's works, the figures here are large.

The American businessman Henry Clay Frick bought this painting in 1919. He died in December of that year, and it is said to be one of the last works he bought. Today it can be seen with two other Vermeers in his former mansion, which is now a museum.
